Virendra Bhavsar
Professor
and Dean, Faculty
of Computer Science, UNB Fredericton.
Director of Advanced Computational Research
Laboratory. Intelligent Systems: Applications
for e-business and e-Learning. Bioinformatics: Intelligent agents
for automatic annotation of genomic sequences (funded by Genome Canada,
Genome Atlantic, Atlantic Innovation Fund and New Brunswick Innovation
Foundation). Parallel/ Distributed
Computing: Partitioning Mesh-based Applications for Computational
Grids, Concurrent Generation of Fractals, Modeling
of Computational Grids. He is a member of the Research Directorate, ACEnet (Atlantic Computational Excellence Network)
- a $30 million high performance computing initiative in Atlantic
Canada.
Barrie Black
President
and CEO of The New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF). Barrie Black Mr. Black
was the former Vice-President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Aliant Inc. Black
has a broad range of operational experience combined with a corporate legal
background. As general counsel of NBTel, he was a key player in developing and advancing
the company’s innovation agenda. He
also oversaw the successful merger of four telecommunications companies
resulting in a corporate structure with more than 85 companies. Prior to
joining Aliant, he was provincial manager for
Irving Oil Limited, responsible for all the company’s Nova Scotia operations. Prior to that, he
was Vice-President and General Counsel of Nova Scotia Savings & Loan
Company, accountable for lending and deposits operations as well as legal
proceedings. Black holds Bachelor Degrees in Arts and Law from Dalhousie University
in Halifax. While at Dalhousie, he was an outstanding student
athlete. Black also holds a Master of
Laws degree from the University of London, Kings
College, London, England.
In 2003, Black was the recipient of
the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal, which was awarded to Canadians who have
made a significant contribution to their
fellow citizens, their community or to Canada.
William
"Sandy"
Bird
Sandy Bird, co-founder and CTO
of Q1 Labs, is responsible for the company's strategic technology direction. Sandy has extensive
technology experience specializing in database design and development for web
applications. Prior to Q1 Labs, he held a variety of technical positions at
the University
of New Brunswick in
support, development and administration. Sandy
studied Electrical Engineering at the University of New
Brunswick.
Mark D'Arcy
President and VP of Knowledge Design, Knowledge
Atlas Inc. Mark D'Arcy has a Bachelor of Science Degree, Honours
at the University
of New Brunswick.
Mark was enrolled in the University
of Toronto Pathology
graduate studies program when he first started working on the concepts for
Knowledge Atlas. He has worked as a Research and Development Project
Coordinator for CARIS, a world leader in spatial
information management systems. Mark founded Knowledge Atlas Inc. to develop
innovative wayfinding and learning tools for the
Web, tools that allow users of search engines and social networking sites to
be more effective in their finding and browsing strategies.
John DeDourek
Professor,
Faculty of Computer Science, UNB Fredericton.
Principle investigator of AIF Communication
Networks and Service Research. His current research is focused on data
networks. He is also interested in the newer wireless networks as well as the
more traditional wired (and fiber) networks, especially network performance,
particularly for real time flows such as audio and video.
Gerhard Dueck
Professor,
Faculty of Computer Science, UNB Fredericton.
He has been actively involved in the IEEE Computer Society Technical
Committee on Multiple-Valued Logic, where he severed as chair in 1998 and
1999. He was program chair of the IEEE International Symposium on
Multiple-Valued Logic in 1993, 2004 and 2008 and symposium chair in 1997. His
research interests include reversible logic, Reed Muller expansions,
multiple-valued logic, and digital design. He has published more than 40
refereed technical papers in international journals and conference
proceedings.
Ali Ghorbani
Professor and Assistant Dean

Science, UNB. Director of Information
Security Centre of Excellence, Director of Intelligent and Adaptive Systems (IAS)
Laboratory and Network and
Information Security (NIS) Laboratory, Project leader of Adaptive Websites R&D project,
Project leader of Fast Intrusion Detection &
Response System (FAST ID) project.
Ken Kent
Associate
professor, Faculty of Computer Science, UNB Fredericton. He received his B.Sc hons. (1996)
from Memorial University,
M.Sc (1999), and Ph.D. (2003) degrees from the University of Victoria. His areas of interest have
started from networks and evolved through distributed computing, parallel
computing, virtual machines, and hardware/software co-design. Through this
path, he has also been involved in software engineering, embedded systems,
and reconfigurable computing.
Bernd Kurz
Retired
Professor, Faculty of Computer Science, UNB Fredericton. Principle investigator of AIF Communication Networks and Service Research. His
current research centers about data communications and networking. This
research addresses emerging technologies in wireless networks, from WWAN to WPAN and deals
primarily with mobility enablers in global heterogeneous networks, and with
applications for mobile end user devices, such as laptops, PDAs and Smartphones. In
addition, QoS-enabling multi-tier handoff and other
protocols for non-conventional link media in a variable-delay/harsh-error
environment are researched.
William
Langley
Technology
Advisor with the NRC-Industrial Research Assistance Programme
in New Brunswick since 1993 specializing in the area of software and Ebusiness applications. In this capacity he has sponsored
leading edge software development projects in a range of small companies and start-ups.
This has included extensive business and technology mentoring to early stage
companies across the Maritime Region. Considerable experience in this mix has
been gained in assisting university spin-offs and technology transfer
scenarios through the full business cycle to commercialization.
Eddie
Oldfield
Eddie Oldfield works as
Director of the New Brunswick Climate Change Hub and Mapping Initiatives for
the New Brunswick Lung Association. Mr. Oldfield has coordinated over
80 partners in Canada and
the United States
to develop a web-based map application and share over 1,600 layers of
geospatial content in the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure. Mr. Oldfield was invited to speak at
various national and international conferences regarding climate change,
respiratory health, and the use of web-based geographical information
systems.
Gerry
Pond
As Chairman of Mariner Partners, Inc., Gerry brings
over 40 years of in-depth experience in the information and communications
technology industry and is the driving force behind the formation of Mariner
Partners, Inc. Having been the President of Aliant
Telecom and CEO of NBTel during a period of
significant deregulation in the Canadian industry, Gerry continues to
demonstrate his ability to successfully restructure companies, while
delivering revenue growth and strong operating results. Gerry has also proven
to be an innovator with such start-up IT companies as Q1 Labs, iMagicTV, and Brovada
Technologies.
Sandeep
Singh
Sandeep is the Project Manager with Exigen
(Canada)
Inc. on Business Domain Ontology Development Framework (BDODF)
project. Sandeep also worked as a Software Engineer
at Exigen from 2005 to 2006. He played an important
role in developing the proposal for BDODF, which
eventually landed the R&D grant (~1.9m) from ACOA
under AIF program. His contribution played a
pivotal role in achieving the collaborative research contracts between Exigen and University
of New Brunswick, as well as between
University of New Brunswick and National Research
Council of Canada. As a software engineer, Sandeep
was member of team that developed Intelligent Domain Analysis Tool (IDAT), a precursory prototype for BDODF.
It was well received by users and proved to be the base for BDODF.
Bruce Spencer
Dr. Bruce Spencer was a Professor of Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick's Faculty of Computer
Science from 1990 until 2001. He is a Senior Research in the Internet Logic
Group at the Institute for
Information Technology, National Research Council of Canada. He has a BSc (Dalhousie, 1980), a MMath
(Waterloo 1983), and a Ph.D.(Waterloo, 1991).
Mihaela Ulieru
Professor and NSERC
Canada Research Chair, Faculty of Computer Science, UNB. Professor Ulieru
is Member of the Government of Canada's new Science, Technology and
Innovation Council (2007-2010).
She also established (with
Canada Foundation for Innovation funding) and leads the Adaptive Risk
Management Laboratory (ARM Lab) researching Complex Systems as Control Paradigm for Complex Networks to
develop Holistic Security Ecosystems.
Her current research
is focused on the Cyberengineering of resilient eNetworks (Cyber-Physical
Ecosystems) and their applications to security (critical infrastructure
protection, emergency response management), e-Health (pandemic mitigation)
and networked manufacturing. One highlight of her most recent endeavors is a collaborative project on 'Emulating the Mind'.
