
David Macneil is Professor of Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick. He has been at UNB since 1967 and was Director of Computing Services from 1979 to 2000. Professor Macneil has served on many University committees including Senate and nineteen years on the Fredericton Campus Budget Committee. Current courses are CS2403 - Operating Systems Principles and CS5865 - Data Networks .
Professor Macneil has been extensively involved with organizing computer networking in Canada for the past twenty-five years. He was the UNB representative to the NB/PEI Educational Computer Network from 1981 to 2000. He has served as Executive Secretary of the Canadian university computer network, NetNorth and was a member of the NRC national research network implementation committee. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of CA*net and its vice-chair. CA*net was the original Canadian arm of the worldwide Internet, linking regional networks in all provinces. Professor Macneil is a founding member of the CA*net Institute Board of Directors.
David was a founding member of the Board of Directors of CANARIE a consortium of more than 100 Canadian organizations and the major federal government initiative to construct a world class research network infrastructure for Canada. While on sabbatical leave in 2001 Professor Macneil returned to CANARIE as Director of Network Relations.
David is a founding member of the CA*net II/III management committee operating the current Canadian advanced high speed network, CA*net III.
Professor Macneil was a founding member and chairman of the NATO Science Council Advisory Panel on Computer Networking and is Canadian delegate to the Coordinating Committee on Intercontinental Research Networking (CCIRN). David is a member of the distinguished panel of judges for the Canadian Information Productivity Awards (CIPA).
Professor Macneil was a member of the New Brunswick Task Force on the Electronic Information Highway and of the Public/Private Advisory Council on the Information Highway (NBITC) .
David was among the original inductees to the Canadian Internet Hall of Fame in 1995.
David has several publications on the APL programming language and was Canadian Delegate to the International Standards Organization (ISO) working group on the APL language. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of New Brunswick (APENB).
David has also been Commodore of the Fredericton Yacht Club.
